As an organization, Women in Animation is dedicated to advancing women in the field of animation. Austin is home to a growing group of women talent in animation, powering different studios across our city.

Join moderator and President of Women in Animation, Marge Dean
in discussion with panelists Steph Swope, Co-founder and Producer at Minnow Mountain, Yssa Badiola, writer/director/animator at Rooster Teeth, Julie Newberry-Olson, Storyboard Artist at Powerhouse Animation, and Gracie Arenas Strittmatter, Technical Art Director and Deputy Director of Art & Animation at BioWare, as they talk about the stories they’re working on today and their successes in the field of animation.

Meet the Panelists:

Gracie Arenas Strittmatter

Technical Art Director and Deputy Director of Art & Animation at BioWare

Gracie is Technical Art Director and Deputy Director of Art and Animation at BioWare, a division of Electronic Arts (EA), in Austin, Texas. A 12-year veteran of the gaming industry and professional problem solver, she currently works on Star Wars: The Old Republic and holds credits on AAA titles including Anthem, Madden NFL, NBA Live, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour. She is passionate about leadership development, problem solving, programming, art tools development in Python and C#, collaborating with artists, leading distributed teams, team building, effective communication, and career management. As the first female university graduate in her family, she advocates the power of education and the value of women and minorities in tech and animation. Gracie serves as global co-chair for EA’s Hispanic/Latino Employee Resource Group, Somos EA, and has volunteered with ACM SIGGRAPH for 18 years. She volunteers in the community to introduce students to careers in games and serves on the industry board for the Texas A&M Department of Visualization. She is originally from San Antonio, Texas and holds a BS in Computer Science and a MS in Visualization Sciences from Texas A&M University.

Julie Olson graduated from California State University Fullerton, earning a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Animation. In the years since, she worked as a storyboard artist and designer for various clients including New York Magazine, Me You Health, and Marvel Animation. After storyboarding for the animated MARVEL'S GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, she taught digital illustration and storyboarding at the acclaimed Orange County School of the Arts. Though native to California, she has since moved to the lovely state of Texas. Under the Powerhouse Animation Studios banner, she worked as a storyboard artist and cleanup artist on SEIS MANOS.  When you catch a rare glimpse of her with time on her hands, you will find her gaming and -surprise, surprise-  drawing. 

Steph Swope
Studio Co-founder and Producer

After earning a BFA in Photography from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Steph Swope began a diverse career in the visual arts. A veteran of the independent film industry, Steph rose from art department and photo/video research to producing award winning animated series and feature films. Steph produced the rotoscope animation unit for Undone.

Yssa Badiola
Director, Rooster Teeth

Yssa Badiola is a director for Rooster Teeth Animation's Direct division, concentrating on delivering animation and animated content by fans and for fans. After graduating from California College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation and a minor in Creative Writing, she worked as an assistant animator at Bento Box Entertainment before joining Rooster Teeth Animation as an animator where she quickly transitioned to a director. She participates in other video/audio content for the company, such as the podcast I Have Notes, and is working on her own show with the team called, "Recorded By Arizal." She enjoys playing games, imagining dance sequences in her head, and has been told she's the main character Retsuko from Aggretsuko.

This panel will be moderated by Marge Dean, Head of Studio for Crunchyroll and President, Women in Animation.

Emmy-Award winner Margaret Dean is the Head of Studio for Crunchyroll, the world’s most popular anime brand. In this role, Dean is responsible for the development and production of original content, operating from studios in Los Angeles and Tokyo. Dean is also the President of Women in Animation.  Prior to Crunchyroll, Dean was the General Manager of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the largest stop motion studio in Southern California, where she supervised production of Emmy award-winning “Robot Chicken” (Adult Swim) and “Buddy Thunderstruck” (Netflix) as well as expanded Stoopid Buddy’s range of work to include 2D and 3D CGI. Known for building studios and animation pipelines, Dean has been responsible for the design or re-design of several studios large and small, including Columbia-TriStar TV, Warner Bros. Animation, Mattel’s Playground Production, Omation (Steve Oedekerk), Technicolor Animation and Wildbrain Entertainment.
